<p>The Dry River is a 9.0 mi long river in the White Mountains of New Hampshire in the United States. It is a tributary of the Saco River, which flows to the Atlantic Ocean in Maine. For nearly its entire length, it is within the Presidential Range-Dry River Wilderness of the White Mountain National Forest.</p><br>
<p>The Dry River rises in Oakes Gulf, a glacial cirque on the southern slopes of Mount Washington, the highest peak in the northeastern United States. The river flows southwest through a wooded mountain valley between the southern part of the Presidential Range to its west and the lower Montalban Ridge, including Mount Isolation, to its east. It is paralleled for its entire distance through the wilderness area by the Dry River Trail.</p><br>
<p>The river ends in Crawford Notch State Park, where it joins the Saco River.</p><br>
<p>The Cutler River is a stream located in the White Mountains of New Hampshire in the United States.</p><br>
<p>Approximately 1.8 mi in length, it is a tributary of the Ellis River &ndash; a part of the Saco River watershed flowing to the Atlantic Ocean in Maine.</p><br>
<p>The river rises as two branches on the eastern slopes of Mount Washington, the highest peak in the northeastern United States. The western branch, identified as the main stem by some sources, begins in Tuckerman Ravine. The northern branch, shown as the main stem by the USA Geological Survey, flows out of Huntington Ravine. The two branches join approximately 0.5 mi east of the Hermit Lake structures in Tuckerman Ravine and continue east down the side of Mount Washington, joining the Ellis River a short distance above Crystal Cascade, on the western slopes of Pinkham Notch.</p><br>
<p>The Sawyer River is a 9.1 mi long river in the White Mountains of New Hampshire in the United States. It is a tributary of the Saco River, which flows to the Atlantic Ocean in Maine.</p><br>
<p>The Sawyer River rises in the unincorporated township of Livermore, New Hampshire, on the eastern side of Hancock Notch, a pass in the Pemigewasset Wilderness between Mount Hancock to the north and Mount Huntington to the south. The river flows east, paralleled by the Hancock Notch Trail, into a broad valley with Mount Carrigain to the north and the smaller summit known as Greens Cliff to the south.</p><br>
<p>The river turns northeast, with Carrigain Brook joining from the north and the outlet of Sawyer Pond joining from the south, and enters a deeper, narrower mountain valley as it descends to Crawford Notch. The river is paralleled in this lower section by the Sawyer River Road, a gravel Forest Service access road open to the public May–October. The Sawyer River enters the town of Hart&#39;s Location and ends at the Saco River near its great bend to the east as it leaves Crawford Notch.</p><br>
<p>Yate Volcano is a large, glaciated stratovolcano located in the southern Andes, in the Los Lagos Region of Chile, south of the Reloncaví Estuary. Yate lies on the major regional Liquiñe-Ofqui Fault Zone, and is located 10 km north-east of the smaller Hornopiren volcano. There are no historical records of recent volcanic activity, but there is strategic evidence of smaller eruptions sometime in the Holocene.</p><br>
<h2>1965 Landslide and Tsunami</h2><br>
<p>On February 19, 1965 a non-eruptive landslide of ice and rock caused by unusually heavy summer rains slid rapidly into a narrow gully, descended around 1500 meters in elevation, and crashed into Lake Cabrera below. This triggered a tsunami that thundered across the lake and swept through the lakeside community of Lago Cabrera just moments later. There was virtually no warning and the community was caught by surprise. The entire village was destroyed, killing twenty-seven people. It is considered the worst volcano-related loss of life in Chile since the Villarrica eruptions of 1948-1949. The debris field left behind by the tsunami is still visible today, and the people of nearby Hornopirén commemorate the tragedy every year with a pilgrimage to the site and the memorial chapel.</p><br>
<h2>Future Dangers</h2><br>
<p>With a warming climate, increased rain and increasing glacial meltwater may accelerate edifice collapse. This has potential implications for more landslide hazards in the area of the volcano, and tsunami risks in the lake area.</p><br>
<p>The Foix is a river in Catalonia in the province of Barcelona, northeastern Spain. Its source is near La Llacuna in the Comarca of Anoia 800 m above the sea. Later it runs through the Comarca of Alt Penedès, where it feeds a reservoir in the nature reserve of Parc del Foix since 1928, which is highly important for the drinking water supply of the densely populated coastal plain between Barcelona and Tarragona. Then it goes through the Comarca of Garraf from north to the south where it ends into the Mediterranean Sea west of the village of Cubelles. This little delta became an important natural reserve and recreational area after the campground ″Camping Paradiso″ was removed in the late 1990s.</p><br>
<p>For most of the year, the river is dried up because of the dam and because of hot-summer climatical reasons. That can suddenly change in the winter months when heavy rain comes down in the mountains.</p><br>
<p>The Roki Tunnel  is a mountain tunnel of the Transkam road through the Greater Caucasus Mountains, north of the village Upper Roka. It is the only road joining North Ossetia–Alania in the Russian Federation into South Ossetia, a breakaway republic of Georgia. The road is manned at the town of Nizhny Zaramag in North Ossetia and is sometimes referred to as the Roki-Nizhny Zaramag border crossing.</p><br>
<p>The tunnel, completed by the Soviet authorities in 1984, is one of only a handful of routes that cross the North Caucasus Range. It is at about 2,000 meters altitude and its length is 3,730 meters, and near the Roki Pass at about 3,000 meters altitude, which can only be used in summer. The other routes between Georgia and Russia include the Kazbegi-Verkhni Lars customs checkpoint on the Georgian Military Road, closed June 2006 and reopened 2010, and the Gantiadi-Adler crossing in Abkhazia which Georgia asserts functions illegally.</p><br>
<p>The tunnel has been important throughout the Georgian-Ossetian conflict. The South Ossetian authorities use tolls levied on tunnel traffic as one of their main sources of revenue. The Georgian government – backed by the United States – has long called for the South Ossetian side of the tunnel to be placed under the control of international monitors, rather than by the South Ossetian secessionists and their Russian allies. When the Russian authorities blocked the Kazbegi-Verkhni Lars customs checkpoint between June 2006 and March 2010, the Roki Tunnel was the only available road route from Russia to South Ossetia. The tunnel was also used as a supply route for the Russian troops during the 2008 South Ossetia War.</p><br>
<p>The tunnel was reconstructed due to damage caused by 2008 South Ossetia War. Reconstruction took two and half years and was finished in October 2015. All costs of reconstruction were paid by Russian side.</p><br>
<p>Holston Mountain is a mountain ridge in Upper East Tennessee and southwest Virginia, in the United States. It is in the Blue Ridge Mountains part of the Appalachian Mountains. Holston Mountain is a very prominent ridge-type mountain in Tennessee&#39;s Ridge and Valley Region, about 28 miles  long, running from southwest to northeast, covering about 268 square miles . Its highest summit is Holston High Point, on which a Federal Aviation Administration  aircraft navigational beacon is located, at an elevation of 4,280 feet  above mean sea level. The second highest point is Rye Patch Knob, at 4,260 feet  above mean sea level. The third highest point is Holston High Knob where an old dismantled Cherokee National Forest fire tower  marks the elevation at 4,136 feet  above mean sea level.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>Holston Mountain is located in the Cherokee National Forest. It is bounded on the northwest by South Holston Lake; on the southeast by Stoney Creek Valley, Shady Valley, and the Iron Mountains; on the northeast by the town of Damascus, Virginia; and on the southwest by the community of Keenburg, near Elizabethton, Tennessee.</p><br>
<p>The southern portion of Holston Mountain marks the boundary between Sullivan County and Carter County; the northern portion is between Sullivan and Johnson County. The small northernmost portion extends into Washington County, Virginia.</p><br>
<p>Panhandle Road is located off State Highway 91 in Carter County and ascends Holston Mountain for three miles (5 km) from the eastern side and ends four miles (6.5 km) along the ridge southwest of Holston High Point. During periods of heavy snow and ice, hunting season, or nesting season, the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency closes off Panhandle Road with an iron gate.</p><br>
<p>Located near the Cherokee National Forest boundary and to the left of Panhandle Road is a parking area and foot trail that leads down the slope to the Blue Hole Falls (approximately 45 ft high). The iron gate referred to above is there, owned and maintained by the Cherokee National Forest, Unaka District. No matter, though. the last three miles (5 km) of Panhandle Road along the top of the ridge are filled with washouts, steep drop-offs, and no turnarounds. Vehicle travel on those last three miles (5 km) is at the driver&#39;s risk.</p><br>
<p>USA Route 421 crosses Holston Mountain at Low Gap, connecting the community of Shady Valley, Tennessee, with the city of Bristol, Tennessee.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Holston Mountain is named after the Holston River, which is named for Stephen Holston, a descendant of a Swede of New Sweden. Stephen Holston moved west and in 1746 built a cabin near the headwaters of a little creek. When surveyors were working in the area the next year they gave the creek the name "Holstons Creek", because Stephen Holston lived on it. Later pioneers followed the creek downstream where, after receiving many tributaries, it was wide enough to become a river and so it became known as the Holston River. George R. Stewart, describing this placename history, notes, "Thus one of the largest streams of that region came to bear the name of a common settler". Stewart goes on to note that the nearby Clinch River is likewise named for a "common settler". Unlike Holston, the identity of Clinch is unknown, except that Dr. Walker wrote of a stream called "Clinchs River, from one Clinch a hunter".</p><br>
<p>October 4, 1976 Kingsport, Tennessee Daily News staff writer, Mark Aldeen, in an article entitled “Investigation Into Cause Of Plane Crash Continues”, reported the crash landing of a USAF reconnaissance plane on Holston Mountain, 13.2 miles from the Tri-cites airport. The RF-4C “Phantom” carried two Airmen, neither which survived.</p><br>
<p>September 1, 2007 The FAA says five Jehovah&#39;s Witnesses ministers from East Tennessee were killed when their small plane crashed in the Cherokee National Forest on Holston Mountain shortly after takeoff. A passing airplane spotted the smoldering wreckage around 7:00 p.m. Saturday about a mile and a half down the southern side of the mountain, from the Holston High Point broadcasting antenna farm.</p><br>
<h2>Trails</h2><br>
<p>The Appalachian Trail crosses over from Iron Mountain from the southeast side, then runs along the upper northeast end of Holston Mountain. The trail descends on the northeast end, sloping down the mountain into Virginia, the town of Damascus, and continues to Mount Rogers, the highest point in Virginia.</p><br>
<h2>Communications Hub</h2><br>
<p>Early broadcasters in the 1950s and 1960s quickly realized Holston Mountain as a prime radio-television transmission location because it is the highest visible point that faces most of the major cities in Upper East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia in the surrounding valley between Knoxville, Tennessee, to southwest of Roanoke, Virginia. As a result, the Holston Mountain ridge is the transmitting site for fivee television stations in the Tri-Cities, Tennessee Television Designated Market Area (DMA). The digital broadcasting antenna for WCYB, PSIP Channel 5, Bristol, Virginia is on Rye Patch Knob, with the top of the antenna 341 feet (104 m) above ground, 2,431 feet (741 m) above the surrounding valley floor, and 4,533 feet (1381.6 m) above mean sea level. The single tower that antenna sits on, is the highest and tallest man-made structure on the mountain, allowing the Virginia station to transmit from the highest broadcasting point in Tennessee, Virginia and Kentucky. The television towers for WJHL, PSIP Channel 11, Johnson City, Tennessee, and WKPT, PSIP Channel 19, Kingsport, Tennessee, are standing side by side in a common broadcasting antenna farm on the southwest slope of Holston High Point, one mile (1.5 km) southwest of Rye Patch Knob. The antenna for WJHL stands 200 feet (61m) above ground, 2,319 feet (707m) above the surrounding valley floor, and 4,370 feet (1,332m) above mean sea level. The antenna for WKPT next door stands 193 feet (58.8m) above ground, also 2,319 feet (707m) above the valley floor, and 4,366 feet (1,331m) above mean sea level.</p><br>
<p>According to a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) filing, the transmitter for WEMT, PSIP Channel 39, currently on Camp Creek Bald (Viking Mountain) outside Greeneville, Tennessee will be relocated to the same tower used by co-owned station WCYB-TV on Holston Mountain, some time in 2010.</p><br>
<p>Holston Mountain is also the transmitting site for three FM Class C radio stations: WTFM-FM 98.5, Kingsport, Tennessee; WXBQ-FM 96.9, Bristol, Virginia and WETS-FM 89.5, Johnson City, Tennessee. All three antennas and the backup antennas are located at the antenna farm on the southwest slope of Holston High Point. Also located on the ridge are the antenna for one FM Class C1 radio station, WHCB-FM 91.5, Bristol, Tennessee, located at Rye Patch Knob; one FM Class C2 antenna for radio station WCQR-FM 88.3, Kingsport, Tennessee, and one FM Class D antenna for radio station W214AP-FM 90.7, Johnson City, Tennessee, both transmitting from the antenna farm on the southwest slope of Holston High Point. Located further down the southwestern slope, off of Holston Mountain Road, is the transmitting site of FM Class C3 WEXX 99.3, Elizabethton, Tennessee. Various USA federal, Tennessee state, Sullivan, Washington and Carter County governmental agencies, along with utility microwave relay stations, also transmit base-to-mobile communications from the Holston High Point antenna farm and Rye Patch Knob.</p><br>
<p>Holston Mountain is also home to several amateur radios transmitter sites. wm4t repeater site sits on the highest peak of the mountain for two-way radio service. This site covers seven states in communications. The tower (shown below) is 120 feet self-supporting. It tops out with an antenna on top of 18 more feet.</p><br>
<h2>Antenna farms</h2><br>
<p>The Holston Mountain collection of broadcast towers, commonly referred to as an "antenna farm" is a good example of radio and TV station owners, co-locating their broadcast towers near each other on the highest point near their FCC city of license. This marketing practice was borne during the 1950s, before cable and during a time when all homes had outside antennae to receive broadcast signals. When the viewer wanted to receive a clear picture or FM stereo from their favorite station, they would point their antennae toward that radio or TV stations broadcasting tower (usually on the highest mountain peak nearby). Other station owners realized the benefit of locating their transmitting towers near that one, to allow viewers to get clear signals from their stations, too. The nearest antenna farm to Holston Mountain is southwest to Sharps Ridge, on which most of the FM and TV stations in the Knoxville, Tennessee Designated Market Area (DMA) have their antennas and towers. The next nearest from Holston Mountain is on Poor Mountain in Central Virginia, home to most of the FM and TV stations in the Roanoke, Virginia Radio and Television DMA. Although most radio and TV stations are in fierce competition with each other in their broadcast markets, they will often locate their broadcasting antennas very near each other, and in some cases, will even share land or towers with each other, in the interests of space, land availability, and the cost of putting a transmission building on top of a mountain.</p><br>
<p>The Walnut Street Bridge is a historic Pratt through truss bridge over the North Fork of the Zumbro River in Mazeppa, Minnesota, United States. It was built as a highway bridge in 1904 but has been restricted to pedestrian use since 1980. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003 for having local significance in the theme of engineering. It was nominated for being the work of noted Minnesota engineer William S. Hewett and his bridge building firm the W. S. Hewett Co., an example further recognized for its exceptional ornamentation.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>A previous bridge at this location, dating to the 19th century, was Mazeppa&#39;s only crossing over the Zumbro River and a link on a key road between Rochester and Lake City, Minnesota. That bridge was condemned in 1901 but remained in use until the Mazeppa village council contracted with the W. S. Hewett Co. in 1904 for a replacement, selling bonds to help raise some of the $3,775 cost. The new bridge was completed in August of that year. As such it fell within a unique window in Minnesota bridge construction: in the prior decade steel had supplanted iron as the construction material of choice, but in 1911 the recently formed Minnesota State Highway Commission would enact standards that led to far greater similarity in bridge designs.</p><br>
<p>The Walnut Street Bridge remained Mazeppa&#39;s primary river crossing until 1922, when a new highway bridge was built one block to the north. The Walnut Street Bridge continued to carry local traffic until 1980, when it was closed to vehicles. It served as a pedestrian bridge but was closed altogether in 1995. The city of Mazeppa rehabilitated the bridge from 2001 to 2002, removing non-historic elements, replacing deteriorated structures, and adding new safety features. The rehabilitation project reopened to bridge to pedestrian use and won an award from the Preservation Alliance of Minnesota.</p><br>
<p>St. Peters Evangelical Lutheran Church, or Iglesia Luterana San Pedro, is a historic church complex located in the Walkers Point neighborhood of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Its buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>St. Peter&#39;s congregation (Evangelisch Lutherischen St. Peters Gemeinde) was founded February 14, 1860 by German immigrants, with 34 charter members. In 1861 they bought a frame building for their first church and moved it to the corner of South Eighth and West Scott Streets. In 1866 they built a small brick-clad Gothic-influenced church designed by John Rugee. In 1873 they added the frame parsonage which still survives, then the school in 1879. In 1884, 13 families were released from the congregation to establish Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church. The congregation is affiliated with the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS).</p><br>
<p>The current church building was designed by Milwaukee architect Andrew Elleson in Victorian Gothic style and built in 1885. It has a cruciform floor-plan, with a massive square tower on each side of the front entrance - one 100 feet tall and the other 165 feet tall. The pedimented gables on the larger tower have a German flavor, similar to St. Marys in Lubeck. The spires on the towers and the peak of the gable are topped with crosses. The interior is well-preserved, with the altar standing in a tall apse, and in front of an antique white wood reredos. To the altars left is an elevated goblet-shaped pulpit. A U-shaped balcony rings the sides and back of the nave, a common feature of 18th century churches in Germany. A large pipe organ commands the back.</p><br>
<p>Other remaining structures in the complex are:</p><br>
<p>The 1873 parsonage is south of the church - a wood frame building in simplified Italianate style. It is now used for church offices.</p><br>
<p>The 1879 school building stands across the street from the church - a 2-story Italianate-styled brick building designed by architect John Rugee.</p><br>
<p>The 1898 social hall designed by O.C. Uehling stands south of the school.</p><br>
<p>In 1860 the congregation and building rose out of a working-class neighborhood of modest homes of immigrants. The south side is not so different in 1987.</p><br>
<p>The Zumbrota Covered Bridge is one of Minnesota&#39;s few last remaining covered bridges. It has been restored and is located in Covered Bridge Park in Zumbrota, Minnesota.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The bridge was completed in November 1869 as a replacement for Zumbrota&#39;s original bridge which was destroyed by the spring flood of that year. The covered portion of the bridge was added in 1871. The bridge served until 1932 when it was moved to the fairgrounds. In 1997 the bridge was moved to its current location in Covered Bridge Park, about 100 yards from its original location.</p><br>
<p>In 1905 Zumbrota had a bridge often called "Zumbrota&#39;s second covered bridge" which spanned the Zumbro River, one-half mile upstream. It was a railroad bridge for the Duluth, Red Wing, and Southern Railroad.</p><br>
<p>Takangaroa Island is one of the two Mayne Islands located near Kawau Island, in the Hauraki Gulf of New Zealand. It is approximately 6 hectare in size.</p><br>
<p>Its name is Māori, and means "The Long Casting of the Net". Nearby Rabbit Island is known as Takangariki,"The Short Casting of the Net", and two rocky reefs between them are considered to be the buoys of the net.</p><br>
<p>The island used to be known as "Goat Island", but the name was legally changed to the Māori name in order to prevent confusion with the popular Marine Reserve.</p><br>
<p>During the late 19th century, it was owned by Sir George Grey, the former Governor-General of New Zealand. The island is now privately owned, and is a Wildlife Sanctuary, meaning that no dogs, cats or guns are allowed.</p><br>
<p>Tregeseal East is a heavily restored prehistoric stone circle around one mile northeast of the town of St Just in Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. The nineteen granite stones are also known as The Dancing Stones. It is the one surviving circle of three that once stood aligned along an east–west axis on the hillside to the south of Carn Kenidjack.</p><br>
<h2>Location</h2><br>
<p>The stone circle is in west Cornwall north of the road from Penzance to St Just in Penwith and is approximately one kilometre east of the hamlet of Tregeseal.</p><br>
<h2>Construction</h2><br>
<p>The stone circle consists of 19 granite blocks with a height between 1.0 -, which describe an approximate circle with a diameter of around 21 m. Two stones are probably missing, since the circle consisted of 21 stones in earlier times. The stone circle was subjected over the centuries to substantial rebuilding and restoration work, so that today only the stones in the eastern half of the circle may be in their original positions.</p><br>
<p>The stone circle was part of a larger ritual area, which, like the area around The Merry Maidens, consisted of three stone circles in an east–west alignment. The other two stone circles were to the west of the existing stone circle. The westernmost of the three circles is today only detectable on aerial photographs. Of the middle stone circle, which originally had the largest diameter and contained ten stones in 1885, today only a single stone is to be found standing.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Stone circles such as that at Tregeseal, were erected in the late Neolithic or in the early Bronze Age by representatives of a Megalithic culture. The first mention of the stone circle in the modern times is found in the 1754 work Antiquities, historical and monumental, of the County of Cornwall by William Borlase, who reported 17 upright standing stones.</p><br>
<p>An early drawing, by William Cotton in 1827, can be found in his book Illustrations of Stone Circles, Cromlehs and other remains of the Aboriginal Britons in the West of Cornwall. At that time some of the standing stones in the other stone circles were still visible. William Copeland Borlase reported 15 stones in his work Naenia Cornubia of 1872, and showed the exact location of the stones.</p><br>
<p>Piz Kesch  or Piz d&#39;Es-cha  is a peak in the Albula Alps of the Rhaetian Alps in Switzerland. At 3,418 m, it is the highest peak in the Albula Alps and the municipality of Bergün, Grisons.</p><br>
<p>The first ascent was made 1846 by J. Coaz, J. Rascher, C. Casper and J. Tscharner.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>Piz Kesch is part of the mountain ridge which divides the southeastern Swiss Alps between the Rhine drainage basin (North Sea) and the Danube drainage basin (Black Sea). It is also the highest peak in the Eastern Alps north of the Inn River. On the north side lies the Porchabella Glacier.</p><br>
<p>West of Piz Kesch lies the Albula Pass (Pass d&#39;Alvra in Rumantsch); to the north lies the valley of Davos, and to the south lies the Upper Engadine. On the foot of Piz Kesch in the Engadine lies the village of Madulain (1,694 m).</p><br>
<p>Two SACs alpine huts lie close to Piz Kesch which are the Chamanna dEs-Cha or Es-Cha Hütte (ca 2,594 m), and the Kesch-Hütte or Chamanna digl Kesch at (ca 2,625 m). The first lies on a 3-hour walk from Madulain, La Punt and Zuoz and about 1½ hours from the Albula Pass road. Kesch-Hütte lies 4½ hours from Bergün and can be reached as well from the Davos southern valleys of Sertig and Dischma or by a longer walk via Val Susauna coming from Cinuos-chel.</p><br>
<h2>Climbing history</h2><br>
<p>The tower-like peak of Piz Kesch was reached for the first time on September 7, 1846, by Chr. Casper, Johann Coaz, J. Rascher, J.R. Tscharner. In 1864 the ascent was repeated by Francis Fox Tuckett and Fowler, with guides C. Michel and M. Payot. From the Platzli huts, located above Bergün, they reached in 3 hours a pass (3,008 m) on the ridge above the Vadret da Porchabella, overlooking the head of the Es-cha valley on the east. From this — called Porta d&#39;Es-cha — they finally reached the peak in less than 2 hours. They afterwards descended in 3 hours from the pass to La Punt on the east side of the mountain.</p><br>

<h2>Hiking</h2><br>
<p>A network of marked mountain paths leads to the southern, western and northern face of Piz Kesch wereas the eastern face is covered with a glacier and connected with the rest of this massif thus not accessible on hiking trails. The "Kesch-Trek" leads from Dischma via the Scaletta pass towards the southwest and to the Kesch-. In the following leg the route passes the western face and reaches Chamanna d&#39;Es-Cha hut via Fuorcla Pischa, lying already in the southern face of Piz Kesch.</p><br>
<p>Washington&#39;s Headquarters at Valley Forge, also known as the Isaac Potts House, is a historic house that is one of the centerpieces of Valley Forge National Historical Park in southeastern Pennsylvania. Probably built about 1773, General George Washington made his headquarters here during the encampment at Valley Forge of the Continental Army between December 1777 and June 1778. The restored building is part of the Valley Forge National Historical Park and is open to the public. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1972.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>Washington&#39;s Valley Forge Headquarters stands between Pennsylvania Route 23 and the Schuylkill River near the center of Valley Forge National Historical Park. It is a two-story stone structure, three bays wide, with a side gable roof. A single-story ell extends to the left. The main entrance is in the left-most bay, sheltered by a gabled hood. There is a secondary entrance on the right end wall. The gable ends have pent roofs below, and circular windows in the gable center. The interior is decorated with period 18th-century furnishings and artifacts related to George Washington.</p><br>
<p>The house was built 1768-70 by Isaac Potts, a Quaker who operated a grist mill nearby. George Washington, and later his wife Martha as well, occupied this house from Christmas Eve 1777 until June 18, 1778. Washington conducted the army&#39;s business in an office on the ground floor during that period.</p><br>
<p>Mount Ray, also known as Ray Mountain, is a subglacial mound in Wells Gray Provincial Park, British Columbia, Canada. Mount Ray last erupted during the Pleistocene. It is part of the Wells Gray-Clearwater volcanic field.</p><br>
<p>The lava flows were restricted by larger masses of ice in the valleys on either side of Mount Ray, so the lava did not extend any great distance from its origin.</p><br>
<p>Mount Ray was named for John Bunyan Ray, the first settler in the Clearwater Valley. He was born in 1878 in North Carolina and came to the Valley in 1909. He cleared land and established a farm in the wilderness south of Clearwater Lake. He married Alice Ludtke in 1932 and they raised three children, Nancy, Doug and Bob. The Ray family decided to move to the North Thompson Valley in 1946, mainly so the children could receive a school education instead of by correspondence. In December 1947, John Ray trekked into his old homestead and died there from a heart attack. Ray Lake, east of Mount Ray, and Ray Mineral Spring are also named for John Ray.</p><br>
<p>Mount Ray is best viewed from a plane and its bright red color contrasts with the forest below. The west slopes can be seen from boats on Clearwater Lake. No trails go anywhere near the mountain. The Kostal Lake trail used to pass 8 km to the south, but this trail was permanently closed by BC Parks in 2013.</p><br>
<p>The Strawberry Range, also known as the Strawberry Mountains, is a mountain range in the USA state of Oregon. It is east of John Day, within Malheur National Forest. The highest peak is Strawberry Mountain.</p><br>
<p>The Strawberry Range is part of the larger Blue Mountains range, and contains the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness.</p><br>
<p>Pioneers named Strawberry Mountain after observing prolific wild strawberries growing in a nearby valley.</p><br>
<p>The area has extremely diverse ecological composition, which includes five of seven major life zones in North America. Indigenous populations of Rocky Mountain Elk exist as well as mule deer, antelope, black bear, cougar, California bighorn sheep, ruffed and blue grouse, pileated woodpecker, sharp-shinned hawk, bald eagle, pine marten, mink, beaver. There are 378 animal and 22 fish species present.</p><br>
<p>Mountain goats are seen at the higher elevations of the Palisades ridge as of Aug 7 2016. A hunting tag for mountain goats on the Strawberry Mountain was issued for the first time in 2014 by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.</p><br>
<h2>Recreation</h2><br>
<p>Normal hiking season is July to November, though snow may be encountered at any time of the year at higher elevations.</p><br>
<p>Strawberry Camp, 1.3 mi downstream from the Strawberry Lake (Oregon) along Strawberry Creek, is connected to the lake by a hiking trail. The trail continues upstream 1.2 mi from the lake to 40 ft Strawberry Falls and then another 0.6 mi to Little Strawberry Lake. Another trail leads from Strawberry Falls 6.3 mi to the peak of Strawberry Mountain.</p><br>
<p>Loch Carron  is a sea loch on the west coast of Ross and Cromarty in the Scottish Highlands, which separates the Lochalsh peninsula from the Applecross peninsula, and from the  headland east of Loch Kishorn. It is the point at which the River Carron enters the North Atlantic Ocean.</p><br>
<p>According to the marine charts, the tidal currents reach 3 knot in the narrows, although not much water disturbance is visible in the flow. At the narrows, the depth of water is less than 20 metres, but in the basins on either side, it extends to a depth of more than 100 metres. Beneath the cliffs at Strome Castle is a colony of flame shells.</p><br>
<h2>Tourism</h2><br>
<p>Tourism is a significant industry in the Highlands of Scotland and one that generates important local economic activity. It provides employment for local people and attracts many visitors to Wester Ross in general and Lochcarron in particular because of its traditional seaside location.</p><br>
<p>The Kyle of Lochalsh Line runs along the south side of the loch, with railway stations at Attadale, Stromeferry, Duncraig, and Plockton.</p><br>
<p>Nazko Cone is a small potentially active basaltic cinder cone in central British Columbia, Canada, located 75 km west of Quesnel and 150 kilometers southwest of Prince George. It is considered the easternmost volcano in the Anahim Volcanic Belt. The small tree-covered cone rises 120 m above the Chilcotin-Nechako Plateau and rests on glacial till. It was formed in three episodes of activity, the first of which took place during the Pleistocene interglacial stage about 340,000 years ago. The second stage produced a large hyaloclastite scoria mound erupted beneath the Cordilleran Ice Sheet during the Pleistocene. Its last eruption produced two small lava flows that traveled 1 km to the west, along with a blanket of volcanic ash that extends several km to the north and east of the cone.</p><br>
<h2>Geology and history</h2><br>
<h3>Origins</h3><br>
<p>Nazko Cone probably began erupting about 340,000 years ago and has grown steadily since then. Like all of the Anahim volcanoes, Nazko Cone has its origins in the Anahim hotspot&mdash;a plume of magma rising from deep in the Earth&#39;s mantle. The hotspot remains in a fixed position, while the North American Plate drifts over it at a rate of 2 to 3.3 centimetres per year. The upwelling of the hot magma creates volcanoes, and each individual volcano erupts for a few million years before the movement of the plate carries it away from the rising magma.</p><br>
<p>The hotspot has existed for at least 13 million years, and the Anahim Volcanic Belt stretches almost 600 kilometres (400 mi) away from the hotspot. Currently, the hotspot lies under Nazko Cone, which is the youngest volcano in the Anahim Volcanic Belt.</p><br>
<h3>7200 BP Eruption of Nazko Cone</h3><br>
<p>The eruptive cycle of Nazko Cone 7200 years ago started with the eruption of two different progressions of fluid lava flows, an older grey basalt overlain by a younger, darker black basalt. The passive eruptions were followed by a period of explosive eruptions. This explosive activity built three overlapping cinder cones near the end of the explosive phase of activity. The last phase of explosive activity spread tephra to the north and east of the cones. The deepest deposits near the cones are over 3 m deep and thin to less than a few centimetres only a few kilometres away, which suggests that the explosive eruptions at Nazko Cone were fairly small. However, the last eruption from Nazko Cone could have started forest fires, since there is charcoal inside the tephra layer.</p><br>
<h3>Recent activity</h3><br>
<p>The volcano has been dormant since the 7200 BP eruption. On October 10, 2007, a small swarm of earthquakes appeared 20 kilometres west of Nazko Cone. Most of these earthquakes were magnitude 1.0 or less; some as strong as M 3.1 or 3.2 were centered 25 kilometres below the surface. The cause of this seismic activity is believed to be the upwelling of magma because the area is not close to any faults or tectonic plate boundaries.</p><br>
<h2>Hazards</h2><br>
<p>Future eruptions from Nazko Cone are unlikely to cause many fatalities, due to the region&#39;s remoteness. There is active logging and ranching in the region, and people engaged in these activities are at some risk. Lava flows are likely to flow only a few kilometres from the volcano which could possibly start forest fires in the dry region. Any future eruption is likely to affect low flying air traffic only, since eruptions would likely be in the form of Hawaiian eruption- lava fountains that create small cinder cones and lava flows rather than voluminous ash clouds.</p><br>
<h2>Monitoring</h2><br>
<p>Nazko Cone has been an intensively monitored volcano by the Geological Survey of Canada since October 10, 2007.</p><br>
<p>One of the most important tools is seismometry. About 5 seismometers were set up around Nazko Cone to enable scientists to measure the intensities and locations of hundreds of small earthquakes every day. Since then, there have been more than 1000 small earthquakes recorded. Earthquakes can begin to increase years before an eruption actually starts.</p><br>
<p>Another type of seismic activity occurs in the hours preceding an eruption. So-called harmonic tremor is a continuous "rumble" which contrasts with the normal seismic activity of sudden shocks and is believed to be caused by the rapid movement of magma underground. Volcanic tremor normally indicates an imminent eruption, although it may also be caused by shallow intrusions of magma which do not reach the surface.</p><br>
<p>Another important indicator of what is happening underground is the shape of the volcano. Tiltmeters measure very small changes in the profile of the volcano, and sensitive equipment measures distances between points on the volcano. As magma fills the shallow reservoirs below the summit, the mountain inflates.</p><br>
<h2>Recent history</h2><br>
<p>Nazko Cone was staked for mining its cinder and scoria in the early 1990s by the Canadian Pumice Corporation, and has since been steadily reduced to produce red industrial aggregate for landscaping.</p><br>
<p>Before mining, the Nazko Cone was also a unique ecosystem. The vegetation included a complex of species. Very large old Douglas fir trees were common, growing in some of the more soil-like ash and lava. White spruce was surprisingly common, although severely stunted, whereas lodgepole pine was not.</p><br>
<p>There were some shallow caves and hollows below the volcano. To the west, following the lava flow mentioned above, is a unique wetland which appears to be saturated ash. What makes it unique is the fact that normally wetlands are saturated organic material such as peat moss. The wetland at Nazko Cone, however, is mixed organic and lava or ash, and the resultant ecosystem is quite unexpected.</p><br>
<h2>Geothermal Potential</h2><br>
<p>High heat flow in the Nazko Cone area is being evaluated as a potential source of geothermal heating.</p><br>
<p>Ruby Mountain, locally known as Old Volcano, is a cinder cone in Stikine Region, British Columbia, Canada, located 23 km northeast of Atlin and 6 km south of Mount Barham. A recent collapse on the volcano&#39;s eastern side created a large landslide which dissects this side of Ruby Mountain. The volcano is the largest feature within the Atlin Volcanic Field.</p><br>
<h2>November 8, 1898 eruption</h2><br>
<p>Reports were received of eruptions in the Ruby Mountain area, about 80 km south of Gladys Lake, near the end of the 19th century. Miners working in the area were said to be able to work during the dark nights under the glow of the eruption. However, there has been no evidence found, such as lava flows, that is young enough to have been the site of a historical eruption.</p><br>
<p>The Lake Zumbro Hydroelectric Generating Plant is a hydroelectric facility on the Zumbro River in Mazeppa and Zumbro Townships, Minnesota, United States. The facility consists of a gravity dam and a powerhouse, and the impoundment created is called Lake Zumbro. This dam spans 440 ft and is 55 ft deep. The facility was designed by pioneering hydroelectric engineer Hugh Lincoln Cooper  and was built from 1917 to 1919. It is still operated by its original owner, Rochester Public Utilities , to supply power to Rochester, Minnesota, 15 mi to the south. The Lake Zumbro Hydroelectric Generating Plant was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991 for having state-level significance in the theme of engineering. It was nominated as a representative work of Cooper—one of the nation&#39;s leading hydroelectric engineers in the early 20th century—and his only project in his home state of Minnesota.</p><br>
<p>The OShaughnessy Dam is located on the Scioto River near Dublin, Ohio, United States. The dam forms OShaughnessy Reservoir, which is a major source of drinking water for the city of Columbus. It was completed in 1925 following recommendations of then superintendent Jerry O&#39;Shaughnessy .</p><br>
<p>At the time, the reservoir was described as "the finest inland waterway in the United States." Located 10 mi upstream of the smaller Griggs Dam, it provides a large area for various forms of recreation in addition to its water supply duties. The reservoir holds 6.3 e9USgal over a surface area of 845 acre.</p><br>
<p>The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is located on the east bank of the reservoir, near the dam.</p><br>
<p>In 1990, the dam was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.</p><br>
<h2>Hydroelectricity</h2><br>
<p>The city of Columbus installed a hydroelectric operation on the west side of the dam, which was completed in 1987.</p><br>
<p>The turbines can only be operated when there is sufficient flow, which means the dam cannot continuously produce electricity. With a head of 18 feet (5.5 m),</p><br>
<p>the two turbines together produce 5 megawatts.</p><br>
<p>Despite numerous repair attempts the Hydroelectric Turbines have remained offline for approximately 3 years. It is unknown when, if ever, their operation will resume.</p><br>
<p>The Schreckhorn  is a mountain in the Bernese Alps. It is the highest peak located entirely in the canton of Berne. The Schreckhorn is the northernmost Alpine four-thousander and the northernmost summit rising above 4,000 metres in Europe.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>The Schreckhorn is located 10 km south-east of Grindelwald between the Upper and Lower Grindelwald Glacier. The region is made up of uninhabited glacial valleys, the great Aar Glaciers and the Fiescher Glacier. The summit of the Lauteraarhorn is located very close and reaches almost the same altitude. The highest peak of the Bernese Alps, the Finsteraarhorn lies 6 km to the south.</p><br>
<p>Geologically the Schreckhorn is part of the Aarmassif.</p><br>
<h2>Climbing history</h2><br>
<p>The first ascent was on 16 August 1861 by Leslie Stephen, Ulrich Kaufmann, Christian Michel and Peter Michel. Their route of ascent, via the upper Schreck Couloir to the Schrecksattel and then by the south-east ridge, was the normal route for the following fifty years, but is now seldom used.</p><br>
<p>The peak had been attempted several times before this, most notably by the Swiss naturalist Joseph Hugi in 1828 and the guided party of Pierre Jean Édouard Desor (a Swiss geologist) in 1842. The ambition of hoisting the first flag on the Schreckhorn, the one big Bernese summit which was untrodden, was far too obvious for us to resist, Desor later wrote, but they climbed a secondary summit of the Lauteraarhorn by mistake.</p><br>
<p>The first ascent by the south-west ridge (AD+) – the normal route by which the Schreckhorn is climbed – was made by John Wicks, Edward Branby and Claude Wilson on 26 July 1902. They decided to climb the very steep ridge without the help of local guides and succeeded in reaching the summit. The north-west ridge (the Andersongrat, D) was first climbed by John Stafford Anderson and George Percival Baker, with guides Ulrich Almer and Aloys Pollinger on 7 August 1883.</p><br>
<p>The Strahlegg Hut, destroyed by an avalanche, has been replaced by the Schreckhorn Hut (2,520 m). The Schreckhorn may also be ascended from the Gleckstein Hut (2,317 m) and the Lauteraar Hut (2,392 m).</p><br>
<p>Ellis School is a school building in Ashland, Wisconsin which was built in 1900. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 17, 1980. It is noted for its architecture&mdash;the design of Henry Wildhagen&mdash;which is of the 19th- and 20th-century revival styles.</p><br>
<p>It is a two-story-plus-basement Neoclassical building. According to a 1979 architectural review, itssimple, rectangular mass is varied only by a projecting center pedimented pavilion, cut by a Neoclassical arch over the entrance. The brownstone voussoirs and keystone of the arch and the basement story contrasted with the brick walls relate to the materials of the other schools. Although the grand arch and triple-window motif is again used to mark the story over the entrance, the omission of overt Richardsonian Romanesque references make the Ellis School unique among its fellows. Distribution of double-hung windows to either side of the center pavilion is regular, with four to each side. An elliptical window is set into the center pediment which intersects the low pyramidal roof.</p><br>
<p>Wildhagen also designed three other schools in Ashland, also NRHP-listed: Ashland Middle School (1904), Beaser School (1899), and Wilmarth School (1895).</p><br>
<p>Volcano Mountain is a cinder cone in central Yukon Territory, Canada, located a short distance north of Fort Selkirk, near the confluence of the Pelly and Yukon Rivers. Volcano Mountain is called Nelrúna in the Northern Tutchone language.</p><br>
<h2>Geology</h2><br>
<p>Volcano Mountain is the youngest volcano in the Fort Selkirk Volcanic Field and one of the youngest in the northern section of the Northern Cordilleran Volcanic Province. The lava at Volcano Mountain is called olivine nephelinite, which is a very uncommon type of lava. This type of lava is believed to have come from much deeper inside the Earth than the basaltic lava. The last eruption from Volcano Mountain produced young nephelinitic lava flows that remain unvegetated and appear to be only a few hundred years old. However, dating of sediments in lake impounded by the lava flows indicated that the youngest flows could not be younger than mid-Holocene and could be early Holocene or older.The hot lava flows over the surface of the earth and then hardens to form leave sheets are deposited on top of each other form of volcano</p><br>
<h2>Volcanic hazards</h2><br>
<p>Future eruptions from Volcano Mountain would probably be lava flows, since there is a lack of pyroclastic material. The main hazards from Volcano Mountain are forest fires started by the lava flows and poisonous gases. Older volcanic deposits south of Volcano Mountain indicate that lava flows may have once partly blocked or at least altered the course of the Yukon and Pelly Rivers. Any future activity in this area could disrupt the course of both of these major rivers and could have a serious impact on people living or working downstream.</p><br>
<p>Dotsero is a 700 m wide by 400 m deep maar volcano located in Dotsero, Colorado near the junction of the Colorado River and the Eagle River. It is classified as a scoria cone with evaporitic rock, basaltic tephra, and oxidized sandstone. Erupting approximately 4200 years ago, it is the youngest volcano in Colorado.</p><br>
<h2>Eruption information</h2><br>
<p>This Holocene volcano erupted in the year 2220 ± 300 years B.C. When Dotsero blew, it created small scoria cones that were constructed along a NNE-SSW line on either side of the maar. The eruption date is based upon radiocarbon dating of wood found underneath some of the scoria. It is one of the youngest eruptions in the continental USA and it produced an explosion crater, a lahar, and a 3 km long lava flow.</p><br>
<p>Volcanoes that have erupted in the past 10,000 years are more likely to become active again.</p><br>
<p>Interstate 70 cuts across the lava flow.</p><br>
<p>Blewett Falls Lake  is a reservoir located in Anson County and Richmond County in North Carolina. No bridges span the lake. It is a major lake in the Uwharrie Lakes Region and the southernmost and widest body in this chain of lakes. Created by the damming of the Great Pee Dee River, the lake occupies the former Blewett Falls on that river, which were named after an early local family. The lake was created for hydropower in the early 20th century.</p><br>
<p>The lake is located at 34&deg;58&prime;58&Prime;N latitude, 79&deg;52&prime;40&Prime;W longitude and has a surface area of 2,560 acre at an elevation of 178 ft (54 m) above sea level with 34 mi (55 km) of shoreline..</p><br>
<h2>Aircraft crash</h2><br>
<p>On April 28, 1992, a United States Air Force Lockheed C-130E Hercules, (AF Ser. No. 64-0501, c/n 3985, of the 317th Tactical Airlift Wing) from Pope AFB crashed into the lake during a training mission. All nine crewmembers were killed.</p><br>
<p>Crown Mountain, sometimes called Ellison Peak, is a mountain located in Strathcona Provincial Park on Vancouver Island in British Columbia.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The mountain has historic significance in British Columbia. It formed one corner of the large land grant given to Robert Dunsmuir to fund construction of the E&N Railway. A segment of the boundary of that grant later became a boundary of Strathcona Provincial Park. When BC Premier Sir Richard McBride set aside a reserve for the park, his Minister of Lands, Price Ellison, lead an expedition to explore the new park reserve which included the first ascent of Crown Mountain on July 29, 1910. The crew included Ellison&#39;s 20-year-old daughter, Myrna Ellison, who was first to set foot on the peak, as well as Colonel William Holmes, J. Twaddle, A.L. Hudson, Harry Johnson, Charles Haslam, James Hasworth and Frank Ward.</p><br>
<p> Langli  is a small marsh island in the Ho Bugt near Esbjerg on the Danish North Sea Coast.</p><br>
<p>It is 0.8 km long and is accessible from Ho over a 3 km long causeway at low tide. Langli (original “Langeleje”=long camp) was up to the flood of 1634 part of a peninsula. Afterwards sea-laterally a second peninsula (today Skallingen) began to develop itself, which from now on protected Langli.</p><br>
<p>The island was used for agriculture from the 16th century, but was not permanently settled until 1840 when two families moved there. They diked the island and successfully operated agriculture. In 1911 there were 38 inhabitants and even one school. The destruction by two floods and the refusal of the state to support the reconstruction of the dikes led to all inhabitants leaving the island in 1915. A later owner built himself a mansion on Langli. In 1982 the Danish state took the island over. Today, a scientific station is placed in the mansion.</p><br>
<p>Langli is accessible to the public, by foot, between 16 July and 15 September each year. A multiplicity of different kinds of bird breed on Langli, e.g. seagulls, black-fronted terns etc.</p><br>

<p>St. Paul&#39;s Episcopal Church, built in 1871, is an historic Episcopal church located at 7 Court Place at York Street in Newport, Kentucky, in the United States. On November 25, 1980 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The church was founded on Easter Sunday in 1844, with the assistance of the Rev. Dr. Nicholas Hamner Cobbs, who was then rector of St. Pauls Church in Cincinnati. He helped "the Church-minded people in Newport" to organize their new congregation and the vestry considered him to be St. Pauls founder. Six months later the Rev. Mr. Cobbs was elected Bishop of Alabama.</p><br>
<p>Later in 1844, the vestry bought the small Methodist brick church building on Court Place for $500. The "Methodist Meeting House was 30x40 feet, with side walls 11 feet high". In the front of the Methodist Church interior of the building there was a low gallery, without handrails, for the use of slaves, who came to meetings with their masters."</p><br>
<p>In 1845 St. Pauls was admitted into union with the Episcopal Diocese of Kentucky. In 1871 the cornerstone of the present St. Pauls was laid on the site of the old brick Methodist church. It is a Kentucky landmark designed by J. R. Neff. On a Sunday in August 1873, the bell in the tower first summoned parishioners to Morning Prayer.</p><br>
<p>The cost of construction rose from $19,452 to over $33,000; the church was consecrated in 1888. Although the congregation continued to grow (by 1894 it was the largest parish in the Diocese), the vestry struggled with debt well into the twentieth century. The church and its people have weathered natural disasters of every magnitude, including an earthquake in 1880, the record-breaking Ohio River floods of 1884 and 1937, and the tornadoes of 1915 and 1986.</p><br>
<p>Here worshipped Gen. James Taylor Jr., War of 1812; Henry Stanbery, who defended President Andrew Johnson at his impeachment trial, 1868; Brent Spence, 37 years in the United States Congress, a lifetime member.</p><br>
<p>Today, St. Pauls has an active congregation. The Reverend S. Matthew Young serves as rector. The congregation has now regained parish status in the Episcopal Church. In addition, St. Pauls operates the St. Pauls Food Pantry in Newport serving hundreds of households monthly. Holy Eucharist is celebrated at St. Pauls at 10:30 a.m. and holy days as announced.</p><br>
<p>Gallier Hall is an historic building on St. Charles Avenue in New Orleans, Louisiana. It is the former New Orleans city hall, and continues in civic use. Built 1845&ndash;53, it is a nationally significant example of Greek Revival architecture, and one of the finest works of architect James Gallier. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1974.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>Gallier Hall is located on St. Charles Avenue at Lafayette Square in the Central Business District. The building was originally designed to be the city hall of New Orleans by the noted architect, James Gallier, Sr. Construction began in 1845, and the building was dedicated on 10 May 1853. Gallier Hall is a three-story marble structure fronted by two rows of fluted Ionic columns in the Neoclassical style. It is one of the most important structures built during the antebellum period of the city.</p><br>
<p>After its dedication in 1853, Gallier Hall remained the city hall for just over a century. Many important events during the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the era of Louisiana governor Huey Long took place at Gallier Hall.</p><br>
<p>After the City Hall was moved to the modern complex at Duncan Plaza in the 1950s, old Gallier Hall nonetheless continued its traditional place of honor during Mardi Gras. Viewing galleries in front of the hall are reserved for Mardi Gras royalty, and parades on the St. Charles route pause in front of them. <p>Gallier Hall is currently a convention center, reception hall, and home of the Ty Tracy Theatre, named for the late artistic director of the New Orleans Recreation Department (NORD) Theatre. The Ty Tracy Theatre is home to Julie Condy&#39;s Crescent City Lights Youth Theatre organization.</p><br>
<p>The building also serves as the venue for special civic functions such as mayoral inaugurations. The remains of particularly distinguished citizens sometimes lie in state here following their death, as a sign of deep citywide respect.</p><br>
<p>Dipor Bil, also spelt Deepor Beel  bɪl)  , is located to the south-west of Guwahati city, in Kamrup district of Assam, India</p><br>
<p>It is a permanent freshwater lake, in a former channel of the Brahmaputra River, to the south of the main river. It is also called a wetland under the Ramsar Convention which has listed the lake in November 2002, as a Ramsar Site for undertaking conservation measures on the basis of its biological and environmental importance.</p><br>
<p>Considered as one of the largest beels in the Brahmaputra valley of Lower Assam, it is categorised as representative of the wetland type under the Burma monsoon forest biogeographic region.</p><br>
<p>The Dipor Bil is reported to provide, directly or indirectly, its natural resources for the livelihood of fourteen indigenous villages (1,200 families) located in its precincts. Freshwater fish is a vital protein and source of income for these communities; the health of these people is stated to be directly dependendent on the health of this wetland ecosystem. A member of Deepor Beel Fishermen’s Cooperative Society has succinctly stated: "Our forefathers protected this wetland and we are committed to do the same as we depend on the wetland for our livelihood. We will protect this wetland at any cost and against any odds".</p><br>
<h2>Etymology</h2><br>
<p>The name Deepor Beel is stated to be derivative of the Sanskrit word dipa which means elephant and the beel means wetland or large aquatic body in Assamese language, inhabited by elephants.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>It is claimed that beel was an important dockyard of the Tai-Ahom as well as the Mughals. The medieval history reports of Ahom-Mughal conflicts. It is also stated that Kampitha and Rambrai Syiemship (the supreme political authority is known as the Syiemship in Meghalaya). had control over this area.</p><br>
<h2>Access</h2><br>
<p>It is located 13 km South West of Guwahati on the National Highway (NH. 31), on the Jalukbari-Khanapara bypass, alongside its north western boundary. PWD road skirts the northern fringe of the Rani and Garbhanga Reserve Forests on the south. The National Highway 37 borders the beel on the east and north-east and the Engineering College Road on the north. Also, minor roads and tracts exist in the vicinity of the beel. The beel is about 5 km from the Guwahati Airport (GNB Int. Airport). A broad gauge railway line skirts the lake.</p><br>
<h2>Topography and geology</h2><br>
<p>The beel is bounded by the steep highlands on the north and south, and the valley formed has a broad U-shape with the Rani and Garbhanga hills forming the backdrop.</p><br>
<p>The geologic and tectonic history of the region provide the links to the hydrology and channel dynamics of rivers and pattern, and intensity of land use in the area. It is commonly stated that the beel together with those adjoining it are an abandoned channel of the Brahmaputra system.</p><br>
<p>While the beel and its lowland fringe are said to be underlaid by recent alluvium consisting of clay, silt, sand and pebbles, the highlands immediately to the north and south of the beel are made up of gneisses and schists of the Archaean age.</p><br>
<h2>Hydrology</h2><br>
<p>The Basistha and Kalmani rivers and local monsoon run-off are the main sources of water to the lake, between May and September. Khonajan channel drains the beel into the Brahmaputra river, 5 km to the north. It acts as a natural stormwater reservoir during the monsoon season for the Guwahati city (stated to be the only major storage water basin for the city’s drainage, with about four metres depth of water during monsoon dropping to about one metre during the dry season.</p><br>
<p>The beel has a perennial water spread area of about 10.1 km, which extends up to 40.1 km during floods. However, an area of 414 ha has been declared as "Deepor Beel Sanctuary" by the Government of Assam. As per a Remote Sensing Study the wetland area is reported to have reduced to 14.1% (405 ha) from 1990 to 2002.</p><br>
<p>Temperatures in the beel vary from 10.6 to 32C. During the winter months, when the size of the lake reduces in area by about fifty percent, the shore area (up to one kilometre) is culitvated with rice paddy when the climate is also relatively cool and dry. The tropical monsoon climate prolongs from May to September when it is humid. Pre-monsoon showers are experienced between March and May.</p><br>
<h2>Flora</h2><br>
<p>The hydrophytic vegetation of the beel has been classified, based on ecological adaptation, into the following categories with their floristic elements. These are:</p><br>
<p>Aquatic vegetation like Giant water Lilies, water hyacinth, aquatic grasses, water lilies and other submerged, emergent and floating vegetation are found during the summer season.</p><br>
<p>In the dry areas, during winter, aquatic and semi-aquatic vegetation are seen</p><br>
<p>In deep open water area, marshy lands, mud flat, emergent vegetation, water hyacinth patches, net-grass land patches are reported</p><br>
<p>Migratory water-fowl, residential water-fowl and terrestrial avifauna are common in paddy field areas, dry grassland areas and scattered forest areas.</p><br>
<p>A total of 18 genera of phytoplankton are reported from the core area of the beel ecosystem out of which species of Oscilatoria and Microcystis are dominant. List of aquatic plants identified in the beel are:</p><br>
<p>Eichhornia crassipes, Pistia stratiotes, Ottelia alismoides, Lemna minor, Potamogeton crispus, Vallisneria spiralis, Hydrilla verticillata, Ipomoea reptans, Azolla pinnata, Spirodela polyrhiza, Eleocharis plantaginea, Nymphaea alba, Euryale ferox, Nymphaea rubra and Sagittaria sagittifolia.</p><br>
<p>Euryale ferox, a giant water lily with edible seeds, are leased to earn revenue for the government. Other lake shore vegetation include:</p><br>
<p>Eupatorium adoratum, Achyranthes aspera, Cyperus esculentus, Phragmites karka, Vitex trifolia, Accium basilium, Saccharum spontaneum and Imperata arundinacea.</p><br>
<p>Dominant tree species in the nearby Deciduous forests in the beel basin are species of Tectona grandis or common teak, Ficus benghalensis, Shorea robusta and Bombax malabaricum. In the surrounding forest area, aquarium plants, medicinal plant and orchids of commercial value are reported.</p><br>
<h2>Avifauna</h2><br>
<p>The beel is a natural habitat to many varieties of birds. 219 species of birds including more than 70 migratory species are reported in the beel area. The largest congregations of aquatic birds can be seen, particularly in winter, with a reported recorded count of 19,000 water birds in a day. Some of the globally threatened species of birds like spotbilled pelican (Pelecanus philippensis), lesser adjutant stork (Leptoptilos javanicus), Baer’s pochard (Aythya baeri), Pallas&#39; sea eagle (Haliaeetus leucogaster), greater adjutant stork (Leptoptilos dubius).</p><br>
<p>Among the large number of migratory water fowl, the Siberian crane (Grus leucogeranus) regularly migrates to this habitat during its annual journey. This is in addition to the large congregation of residential water birds seen in the lake.</p><br>
<p>Considering the richness of the bird varieties found in the beel, the BirdLife International has declared Deepor Beel as an Important Bird Area (IBA) with high priority for conservation.</p><br>
<h2>Aqua fauna</h2><br>
<p>Surveys have revealed 20 amphibian, 12 lizards, 18 snakes and 6 turtle and tortoise species in the beel. Over 50 commercially viable species of fish, belonging to 19 families have been identified, which supplies stock to other nearby wetlands and rivers. The beel provides food, acts as a spawning and nursery water body; some of the species breed within the beel.</p><br>
<h2>Land fauna</h2><br>
<p>Wild Asian elephants (Elephas maximus), leopard, jungle cat and the protected barking deer, Chinese porcupine and sambar are found in the beel. Herds of elephants are reported in the beel.</p><br>
<h2>Utility of the beel</h2><br>
<p>The inhabitants around the villages located in the periphery and the cathment of the beel use the beel for:</p><br>
<p>Fishing</p><br>
<p>As a waterway for transporting the villagers of the southern boundary to the N.H. 37</p><br>
<p>Collect fodder for domestic cattle and collect aquatic seeds such as giant water lily, Nymphea sp. etc.</p><br>
<p>Raise boro paddy – sown in December–January and harvested in April–May</p><br>
<h2>Deterioration of the beel</h2><br>
<p>Natural and anthropogenic causes for the deterioration of the beel are many. The major reasons reported in the beel ecosystem are.:</p><br>
<p>Proliferation of human settlements, roads, and industries around the periphery (in the eastern and north-eastern sides) causing pollution problems</p><br>
<p>Waste water from different parts of the city and the adjoining areas</p><br>
<p>Construction of broad-gauge railway line on the periphery of the beel</p><br>
<p>Allottment of the government vacant land to private party by Government settlement department</p><br>
<p>Brick kilns and soil cutting</p><br>
<p>Hunting, trapping and killing of wild birds and mammals</p><br>
<p>Unplanned intensive fishing practices (both during day and night)</p><br>
<p>Pamohi garbage dumping site adjoining the Dipor Bil</p><br>
<h2>Restoration activities</h2><br>
<p>A comprehensive management plan has been set in motion and it is proposed to notify the whole beel area as a protected area.</p><br>
<p>Weeds have been removed in an area of 500 ha and the fish catch is reported to be improving. The long term measures envisaged to preserve the beel environment are:</p><br>
<p>Encroachments and settlements around the beel periphery to be eliminated</p><br>
<p>Train stops on the boundary of the beel to be discontinued</p><br>
<p>To raise suitable plantations on either side of the railway line to reduce noise level</p><br>
<p>Eco-restoration of surrounding forest area</p><br>
<p>To preserve effectiveness of the beel as storm water detention basin for Guwahati city and creation of additional storage capacity in the naturally depressed areas within the greater metropolitan area</p><br>
<p>Guwahati city runoff, which includes sewage, to be treated before discharging into the beel</p><br>
<p>To discontinue land cutting, Brick Kilns and industrial development in the periphery of the beel</p><br>
<p>Government settlements to be discontinued and the beel to be preserved to its natural state</p><br>
<p>Encourage bird related eco-tourism and conservation education.</p><br>
<h3>Bird sanctuary</h3><br>
<p>Deepor Beel Bird Sanctuary covering an area of 414 ha within the larger spread of the beel to shelter several species of birds has been created by the Department of Forests, Assam, and shooting and bird-trapping are prohibited by law, but enforcement is reported to be inadequate. Over 120 species of birds have been listed in the sanctuary, including kingfishers, fishing eagles, adjutant storks and abundant varieties of ducks. A watch tower has been erected on the bank of the beel for bird watching and security purpose.</p><br>
<h2>Public participation</h2><br>
<p>While the management authority for the beel is the Forest Department of the Government of Assam, with the Fisheries Department as the functional Authority, several public and private institutions and universities are involved in creating the awareness of the Ecological importance of the beel and the need to restore it to its original status. Some important ones are:</p><br>
<p>1. The Ramsar Convention, which has recognised the Deepor Beel in its list of 1782 wetland sites, with 158 contracting parties to the convention of the world and holds seminars to create awareness of the beel’s uniqueness.</p><br>
<p>2.Aaranyak, a non-governmental organization set up "to foster conservation of biodiversity in Northeast India through research, environmental education, capacity building and advocacy for legal and policy reform to usher a new era of ecological security" is actively involved in Community Based Conservation Projects, which includes among other projects the "Deepar Beel Community Conservation Project". The project was designed "to reduce the anthropogenic pressure on the wetland by providing for alternative and diversified means of livelihood to the people living along the fringe villages. The purpose of the project is to set up some community run ‘Self Help Groups’ (SHGs) to strengthen their livelihood options through diverse means and garn their support in the conservation of Deepar Beel as wetland ecosystem."</p><br>
<p>3.North Dakota State University, USA has a website created as a tool to facilitate better understanding of the concepts and practices in environmental management, and to complement the graduate course materials for the students, undertook a "Case Study of Deepor Beel Wetland Management" for the fall course of 2007.</p><br>
<p>4.The Animal Ecology Laboratory in the Department of Zoology, Guwahati University has been involved in biological studies of the beel.</p><br>
<p>5. ≤ Chandan Kumar Duarah (Pratidin Group)and Mubina Akhtar, environmentalists have been studying and working for preservation of the wetland and published many reports. ≥</p><br>
<h3>Guwahati Water bodies (Preservation and Conservation) Bill, 2008</h3><br>
<p>The Guwahati Waterbodies (Preservation and Conservation) Bill, 2008 has been passed with the objective of preserving the wetland, minimising the problem of waterlogging in the city and creating an eco-friendly atmosphere. With this Bill at its command, the Government of Assam is planning to re-acquire land in the periphery of Deepor Beel, to undertake development projects, including water sports at the beel, and for this purpose a budgetary allocation of about US $3 million (Rs.12 crores) has been approved.</p><br>
<p>Madeiral or Monte Madeiral  is a mountain in the island of São Vicente, Cape Verde. Its elevation is 675 meters tall and is the second tallest on the island and top part is mainly lined west to east for some 500 to 600 meters. It gives its name to a small settlement belonging to Calhau, The mountaintop is just south of the settlement and is located in around a third of the way to the Atlantic Ocean. Numerous streams flows to the south and a few north to Calhau. The mountains forms a part of Monte Verde National Park . the park area mainly does not include the valley portion of Calhau but parts or most of the mountain area.</p><br>
<p>It is an example of a sub-humid ecosystem. Of the 93 inventoried species of flora, 17 are on the list of endangered species of São Vicente. Examples of species that are not found elsewhere on the island are Limonium jovi-barba, Sonchus daltonii, Echium stenosiphon ssp. stenosiphon, Campanula jacobaea, Davallia canariensis and Kickxia elegans.</p><br>
<p>The geology forms a part of a rock formation known as Madeiral-Monte Cara formation with its length of 10 to 12 kilometers and rocks are deep as 2,500 meters. They were formed about 4.5 million years ago.</p><br>
<p>Panoramic views at the area of the upper parts includes much of the island except for its outer parts and most and the islands of Santa Luzia to the east and Santo Antão to the northwest.</p><br>
<p>The River Beane is a short river in the county of Hertfordshire, England. A tributary of the River Lea, it rises to the south-west of Sandon in the hills northeast of Stevenage and joins the Lea at Hartham Common in Hertford.</p><br>
<h2>Watermills</h2><br>
<p>In medieval times there were a number of watermills along the course of the Beane. A few of the buildings and mill races survive. Perhaps the most noteworthy site is Sele Mill, upstream of Hertford. It was mentioned in the Domesday Book. Its main claim to fame is that it was temporarily converted for use as a paper mill and was, as far as is known, the earliest paper mill in England. It is not clear when paper production began there, although 1488 has been suggested, but it was certainly underway in the 1490s. Paper from Sele Mill was used in publications from that decade, and the mill was visited by Henry VII. Despite this sign of royal favour, paper production did not continue there for long.</p><br>
<h2>Abstraction</h2><br>
<p>The Beane valley remains mainly rural in character. However, Hertfordshires population increased substantially in the second half of the twentieth century, and the consequent demand for water has affected rivers such as the Beane and the Mimram. In the case of the Beane, a licence was given to abstract water near Aston for Stevenages water supply. The river has since been adversely affected by over-exploitation of the chalk aquifer in its upper reaches.</p><br>
<p>The photo shows a dry section south of Walkern where from the 1990s until about 2014 there was only seasonal flow. An indication of the scale of the decline in flow is that the section at Walkern was once big enough to power a watermill and to support watercress beds.</p><br>
<p>The lower Beane is more robust and there has continued to be regular flow through Watton-at-Stone, Stapleford and Waterford until the confluence with the River Lea. However, overall the river has performed badly in assessments by the Environment Agency of flow level.</p><br>
<h2>Restoration</h2><br>
<p>The state of the upper Beane resulted in calls for the river´s restoration.</p><br>
<p>The management plan for the river includes the objective that there is adequate flow along the length of the river to support a ‘good status’ chalk stream ecology (as defined by the European Union&#39;s Water Framework Directive).</p><br>
<p>One possible approach to the restoration of the upper Beane which was discussed was to use recycled water from sewage treatment works. Sewage from the Stevenage area bypassed the river, being pumped down the Beane valley to Rye Meads near Hertford for treatment and eventual discharge into the River Stort. However, the water could theoretically have been discharged into the Beane if treated further upstream.</p><br>
<p>In the event another option was chosen. Affinity Water was told to take less water from its pumping station near Aston, even though obtaining water from a less environmentally damaging source was difficult as the River Lea&#39;s catchment area as a whole is under pressure.</p><br>

<p>Morven Park is a 1,000-acre historic estate and horse park in Leesburg, Virginia, United States. Located on the grounds are the Morven Park Mansion, the Winmill Carriage Museum, formal boxwood gardens, miles of hiking and riding trails, and athletic fields. The park is also home to the Museum of Hounds and Hunting of North America with displays of art, artifacts and memorabilia about the sport of foxhunting.</p><br>
<p>The Mansion, once the home of Thomas Swann, Jr., governor of Maryland during the Civil War and Westmoreland Davis, governor of Virginia during World War I, is on the National Register of Historic Places and is a Virginia Historic Landmark. The Westmoreland Davis Memorial Foundation operates Morven Park, which is a 501c3 nonprofit organization supported by contributions from donors.</p><br>
<p>The world-renowned Morven Park International Equestrian Center hosts Olympic equestrians and top-level riders from around the world who come to compete in Horse Trials, Dressage, Hunter/Jumper shows, Pony Club and Carriage Driving events. From 1980 until 2010, Morven Park was the site of the Morven Park Steeplechase Races, one of the most popular race meets in the country.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The first structures on the site of Morven Park date to about 1780. A fieldstone house built by Wilson Cary Seldon is now a part of the north wing of the main house, stuccoed over to match the rest of the mansion. Judge Thomas Swann acquired the property about 1800. Around 1830 Swann built the center two-story portion of the house, with flanking pavilions. It is not known whether the pavilions were initially linked to the house, but the renovations included the prominent tetrastyle Greek Revival portico that dominates the front portico. While the brick structure remains, now stuccoed, none of the Swann interiors exist. Judge Swanns son, Thomas Swann Jr., began a remodeling program around 1850, using the Baltimore firm of E.G. Lind and William T. Murdock as architects, converting the Palladian house to the Italianate style with four towers, including one that was five stories tall, stated by The Buildings of Virginia to resemble Queen Victorias Osborne House on the Isle of Wight. The pavilions were by this time linked to the main house. The towers were later removed by Thomas Swann Jr.&#39;s daughter, Mary Mercer Swann Carter, and her husband, Dr. Shirley Carter. They made more changes, raising the height of the hyphens to two stories and reworking the interior.</p><br>
<p>Westmoreland Davis, a New York lawyer, had roots in Virginia and purchased Morven Park in 1903. He and his wife were avid equestrians, and they quickly became involved in the Virginia fox hunting community. Davis was a founding member of the Loudoun Hunt and served as Master of Foxhounds. He later made Morven Park into an agricultural showpiece, while his wife developed formal boxwood gardens near the house. He served as Virginia&#39;s governor from 1918–1922. He and his wife were the last private owners of the estate, which is now run as a nonprofit organization that raises money to keep the park open to the public.</p><br>
<p>From 1967–1991, Morven Park was home to the world-renowned Morven Park International Equestrian Institute. The Institute was a training center for riding instructors, teaching advanced dressage, 3-day-eventing and show jumping. A number of expert riders trained at Morven Park went on to international equestrian competition. In its day, Morven Park was considered the most prestigious riding school in the United States, and flourished under the direction of Major John Lynch, an instructor at the British Army Equitation School at Weedon, as well as at the English military academies of Sandhurst and Woolrich. He had been coach and trainer to British, Irish and American Olympic teams.</p><br>
<h2>Today</h2><br>
<p>The Morven Park International Equestrian Center is undergoing a multimillion-dollar renovation that will return it to the venerated horse park it once was. Work includes renovations to its legendary steeplechase course and the construction of tow new arenas complete with high quality footing located in the racecourse infield. Beginning in the summer of 2017, visitors will enjoy tailgating, picnics and Virginias best wines all in a bucolic setting to watch Morven Park Arena Polo under the stars. Two show arenas were renovated in 2017 with new footing, new fencing and spectator friendly amenities. Morven Parks stellar reputation among top riders, its rolling green countryside, and location in the Washington, D.C. Metro area make it one of the most coveted and prestigious equestrian destinations in the world.</p><br>
<h2>Programs</h2><br>
<p>With its 1,000 acres of rolling hills and pristine landscapes, Morven Park is considered to be the "Central Park" of rapidly growing Loudoun County, Virginia, the wealthiest county in the United States. Every year, more than 200,000 visitors enjoy a variety of recreational activities, including hiking, museum tours, equestrian events, and field sports. As a nonprofit organization, Morven Park relies on donations from supporters to keep its gates open to visitors.</p><br>
<p>Morven Park is also the home of the Center for Civic Impact, which teaches civic skills that help prepare students in grades K–12 to become engaged citizens. In partnership with Loudoun County Public Schools, this program complements elementary, middle and high school curricula, and expands, invigorates and connects classroom learning to the real world.</p><br>
<p>The Dja River  is a stream in west-central Africa. It forms part of Cameroon–Republic of Congo border and has a course of roughly 450 mi.</p><br>
<p>Rising southeast of the southeastern Cameroon town of Abong-Mbang, the Dja Faunal Reserve, which was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, lies along the banks of its upper course. It protects one of the largest tracts of tropical rainforest in Africa. Forming its natural boundary, and almost completely encircling the reserve (except to the south-west), cliffs run along the course of the river in the south part of the reserve for 60 km and are associated with a section of the river which is broken by rapids and waterfalls.</p><br>
<p>Following its course in the reserve, the Dja flows approximately southeast past Moloundou, below which small boats can navigate. At Ouesso, in the Republic of Congo, it empties into the Sangha River.</p><br>
<p>Every year, poachers travel up the Dja for central Nki National Park, where elephant ivory is abundant.</p><br>
<p>Strong currents on the river are a deterrent for half the year, but after that, according to freelance journalist Jemini Pandya, the fauna is easy to prey upon.</p><br>
<p>Houhai refers to a lake and its surrounding neighborhood in Xicheng District of central Beijing, China. Houhai is the largest of the three lakes, along with Qianhai  and Xihai , that comprise Shichahai, the collective name for the three northern-most lakes in central Beijing. Since the early 2000s, the hutong neighborhood around Houhai has become known for its nightlife as many residences along the lake shore have been converted into restaurants, bars, and cafes. The area is especially popular with foreign tourists visiting Beijing and is also often visited by the expatriate community and the younger generations of locals.</p><br>
<p>The Former Residence of Soong Ching-ling and Prince Gong Mansion are both located in the Houhai neighborhood.</p><br>
<h2>Access</h2><br>
<p>Beijing Bus routes 5, 60, 90, 107 and 204 stop at the Drum Tower, just east of Houhai. The nearest subway station at Beihai North on Line 6 is about half a kilometer west of Qianhai. To reach Houhai, subway riders must walk north along the shore of Qianhai to Houhai.</p><br>

<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>It forms a prominent landmark overlooking the harbour at Hout Bay. An unusual feature is that sand has been blown up it by the wind, causing a dune-like feature. This has been popular with local residents to surf down it on polished boards or sheets. Its cliff on the southern side is also a famous climbing spot.</p><br>
<p>In the North it is bordered by Table Mountain National Park, comprising the Orangekloof Nature reserve and the lower slopes of Table Mountain beyond.</p><br>
<p>It is bordered by the Atlantic and Little Lions Head, Kapteins Peak and The Sentinel.</p><br>
<p>The peak is popular for short treks and mountainbiking.</p><br>
<p>Great Borne is a fell in the English Lake District with a height of 616 m. It is a rather secluded hill situated at the western end of the long ridge which divides the Ennerdale and Buttermere valleys.</p><br>
<h2>Name</h2><br>
<p>The name Great Borne only really applies to the fells summit area with most West Cumbrians actually referring to the fell as Herdus. However Bill Birkett in his Complete Lakeland Fells gives Great Borne and Herdus the status of separate fells, with Herdus’ summit standing half a kilometre west of Great Borne with an altitude 562 m. The meaning of Great Borne translates from the French language meaning "Great Boundary" as in the 13th century the fell denoted the edge of the Loweswater forest, an alternative meaning has been put forward as "Great Stream" from the southern Old English language with bourne meaning a stream flowing from a spring.</p><br>
<h2>Topography and geology</h2><br>
<p>Great Borne&#39;s southern slopes are of some interest, they fall away precipitously towards Ennerdale Water with steep crags and scree which are composed of pink granophyre rock which give these slopes a reddish tinge(see picture).Approximately halfway between Great Borne and the part of the fell labelled Herdus on the 1:50,000 O.S. map is the boundary between the Skiddaw Group and the Ennerdale Granophyre intrusion. The outlying low summit of Bowness Knott (333 m) also lies to the south, it is composed of Skiddaw Slate, it gives good views of Ennerdale Water and is an easy climb from the car park which lies at its foot. Historians have also found evidence of an old (possibly Middle Ages) field system on the lower southern slopes of Great Borne below the crags and scree. The northern flanks of the fell descend to the Floutern Pass, a pedestrian route between Ennerdale and Buttermere. To the east Great Borne is connected to the neighbouring fell of Starling Dodd by a ridge, while the western slopes descend quickly to the low ground of the west Cumbrian plain.</p><br>
<h2>Ascents</h2><br>
<p>Great Borne is customarily climbed from the Ennerdale side of the fell, with the car park beneath Bowness Knott being the usual starting point. The route follows Rake Beck for a short distance and skirts the Herdus crags on the eastern side to gain the summit. An ascent using the Floutern Pass is not recommended as the top of the pass is very boggy and the route rather circuitous. The route described in the Wainwright series of guidebooks is currently challenged by a nearby farmer Mr Ireland who has a strong antipathy to walkers and the National Park.</p><br>
<h2>Summit</h2><br>
<p>The summit of the fell has two separate tops divided by a shallow valley, the south top is slightly higher and is marked by an Ordnance Survey trig point and a considerable wind shelter while the northern top has a large cairn which is visible for miles around and gives extensive views of the Loweswater Fells. This large cairn is thought to be the boundary marker from which the fell takes its name.</p><br>
<p>The Sutton Mill Dam is a wildlife nature park and area of open water located in Sutton in the south of St Helens in Merseyside, England. Sandwiched between Clock Face Road, Leach Lane and Mill Lane, it measures 360 metres in length with a waterfall at its eastern end. The lake is formed from the Sutton Brook which flows through Sutton from Chester Lane to Jackson Street and ultimately into the St Helens Canal.</p><br>
<p>In 1976 local residents formed the Sutton Mill Dam Action Group to campaign against plans to allow the site to become a dumping ground for industrial waste. As a result of the local community&#39;s efforts, the site was officially opened as a wildlife park in 1987 with natural recovery encouraged as opposed to artificial landscaping.</p><br>
<p>The success of the project was recognised on May 24, 1988 when Prince Charles visited Sutton Mill Dam to the delight of a crowd of 200 onlookers.</p><br>
<p>The Sutton Mill Dam is one of the most popular angling locations in St Helens containing roach, bream, gudgeon and carp and the East Sutton Angling Club hosts popular summer contests for young anglers. A new private housing development on the site of the old Sutton Monastery cited major development to the, and surrounding, Sutton Mill Dam, however such promises failed to materialise when the housing development was finalised by building company Barratt in 2005.</p><br>
<p>Sutton Mill Dam is owned by St Helens Council and a copy of the register of title can be obtained from HM Land Registry under title number MS184549.</p><br>
<p>The Pilanesberg  is a mountain in the North West Province, South Africa. The mountain is an ancient volcanic structure, circular in shape, that rises from flat surrounding plains. It is formed by three concentric ridges or rings of hills, of which the outermost has a diameter of about 24 km. The Pilanesberg is located 100 km to the northwest of Pretoria and is for the greater part enclosed in a protected area known as Pilanesberg Game Reserve.</p><br>
<p>The Elands River flows south of the Pilanesberg in an easterly direction. There are a number of platinum mines right at the perimeter of the crater formation.</p><br>
<p>The name "Pilanes" comes from a historic Tswana chief named Pilane.</p><br>
<h2>Geology</h2><br>
<p>Although geographically located within the Witwatersrand range, the mountain is geologically part of a feature known as the Pilanesberg Alkaline Ring Complex. It is a vast ring dike of a very ancient extinct volcano that last erupted some 1,200 million years ago.</p><br>
<p>The Pilanesberg is one of the largest volcanic complexes of its type, there are few similar alkaline volcanic structures in the world. Different types of syenites, including a number of rare minerals, occur in the crater area.</p><br>
<p>The formation of the Pilanesberg occurred 2,000 million years ago. As its zenith, the volcano towered to 7,000 metres in height. Over the time, a series of volcanic eruptions occurred. There were further outpourings of lava, craters collapsed, ring fracturing took place around the volcano and magma was squeezed into these fractures. The end result is several "onion rings" of rocks of different ages. Erosion over many millions of years has stripped away the mountain and the highest peak. What we see today is not so much a volcanic crater, but a cross section through the magma pipes that were located at great depth below the mountain&#39;s summit.</p><br>
<p>Lake Musconetcong is located on the border of Morris County and Sussex County, New Jersey, and is part of Hopatcong State Park, which is administered by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. The Musconetcong River flows through the lake.</p><br>
<p>Lake Musconetcong was created in the mid-19th century to provide an additional water source for the Morris Canal. The lake was deeded over to the State of New Jersey with the other parts of the Morris Canal System in 1924. Boating, fishing and ice fishing are popular recreational activities on this lake.</p><br>
<p>The lake covers 329 acres (1.3 km²), with a mean depth of approximately 5 ft and a maximum depth of 10 ft. The lake&#39;s watershed covers 14,000 acres (57 km²). Lake Musconetcong is downstream of Lake Hopatcong, the largest lake in New Jersey and is part of its watershed.</p><br>
<p>The Lake Musconetcong Regional Planning Board has five representatives from each of the five local municipalities, Morris and Sussex counties, and from the State of New Jersey.</p><br>
<p>The Hukawng Valley  is an isolated valley in Burma, roughly 5,586 square miles in area. It is located in Tanaing Township in the Myitkyina District of Kachin State in the northernmost part of the country.</p><br>
<h2>Rivers</h2><br>
<p>The rivers draining into the Hukawng Valley, the Tanai Kha, the Tabye, the Tawan, and the Turong, form the headwaters of the Chindwin River.</p><br>
<h2>Tiger reserve</h2><br>
<p>Ringed by steep mountain ranges to the north, east and west, the valley is known as a habitat of tigers, but encroachment by man has greatly decreased their numbers, to perhaps as few as 100 animals. In 2004, the government established the world&#39;s largest tiger preserve in the Hukawng Valley, the Hukawng Valley Tiger Reserve|</p><br>
<p>Hukawng Valley Wildlife Sanctuary, with an area of approximately 2,500 square miles; later, the Sanctuary was extended to 21,800 km, making it the largest protected area in mainland Southeast Asia. The government&#39;s establishment of the preserve was accomplished in cooperation with the Kachin Independent Army, a formerly-rebel group that inhabits the region.</p><br>
<p>The extremely rare leaf muntjac, also known as the phet-gyi, dwarf deer or leaf deer, also lives in the Hukawng.</p><br>
<h2>Industries</h2><br>
<p>Major industry includes amber and gold mining; most gold mines are now depleted, but the toxic chemicals from former gold extraction have not been cleared, and are seeping into the groundwater.</p><br>
<h2>Discoveries</h2><br>
<p>In 2006, a fossil of the earliest known species of bee was discovered in amber taken from a mine in the Hukawng Valley.</p><br>
<p>In 2014, Researchers from Oregon State University have discovered a preserved example of sexual reproduction in flowering plants in a 100-million-year-old amber fossil. The scene is thought to be the oldest evidence of sexual reproduction ever found in a flowering plant. Named Micropetasos burmensis, the plant is made of bunches of very tiny flowers around a millimetre wide. The discovery was made from amber mines in the Hukawng Valley.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>During World War II, the Ledo Road was built by the US Army across the Hukawng Valley, largely by African-American engineer battalions and Chinese laborers, in order to supply the armies of the Republic of China, who were then allied with the Western Allies in the war against the Empire of Japan.</p><br>
<p>Hotel Colorado is an 1893 Italianate structure in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, United States, and one of the oldest hotels in Colorado.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Established by silver magnate and banker Walter Devereux, construction began in 1891 at a cost of $850,000. Edward Lippincott Tilton designed the building as a replica of the Villa de Medici. Local materials used include cream-colored Roman brick and Peach Blow Sandstone; imported items included 12,000 yards of carpet and 2,000 rose bushes. The Hotel Colorado opened on June 10, 1893 to a program including a fireworks display, an orchestra in the ballroom, and dining at midnight for the 300 couples in attendance.</p><br>
<p>The hotel quickly became a popular summer retreat, earning the nickname of "the little White House of the West" after extended visits by Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft. The teddy bear is alleged to have been invented during President Roosevelts 1905 visit when the hotels maids presented him with a stuffed bear pieced together with scraps of fine material.</p><br>
<p>On September 16, 1925, live music and speech was broadcast by way of telephone from the hotel&#39;s ballroom to Denver radio station KOA.</p><br>
<p>In 1942, the hotel was leased to the United States Navy for use as a hospital. The USA Naval Convalescent Hospital was commissioned on July 5, 1943 and served over 6,500 patients by the end of 1945. The hospital was decommissioned in 1946.</p><br>
<p>In 2003, a time capsule was buried in the courtyard. It is scheduled to be opened in 2043.</p><br>
<p>The National Trust&#39;s Historic Hotels of America added the Hotel Colorado to its list in April 2007.</p><br>
<h2>Famous visitors</h2><br>
<p>Actor Tom Mix, his wife and several production crew members stayed at the Hotel Colorado during the filming of The Great K & A Train Robbery in summer 1926.</p><br>
<p>In addition to the visits by Presidents Roosevelt and Taft, former President Herbert Hoover addressed a luncheon at the hotel on August 2, 1939.</p><br>
<h3>Ghosts</h3><br>
<p>Several ghosts are believed to reside there, notably a young girl in Victorian clothing seen playing with a ball, a female that peers over sleeping male guests, and a male presence on the fifth floor. The two suites in the bell towers are frequently reported to be haunted. The elevator moving on its own without passengers, strange smells and sounds have also been reported by guests and staff. In September 2006, CCPI Paranormal Investigations visited the hotel and recorded two areas of higher electromagnetic energy, one in the corridor in front of room 325 and the other outside room 551.</p><br>
<p>The screams of a woman are often heard throughout the hotel, believed to be of a chamber maid who was involved in a love triangle, and was murdered by one of her lovers. The room in which the woman was believed to have been murdered was a guestroom, it has now been turned into a storage room, due to the history of paranormal happenings occurring there.</p><br>

<p>Fort Jesup, also known as Fort Jesup State Historic Site or Fort Jesup or Fort Jesup State Monument, was built in 1822, 22 mi west of Natchitoches, Louisiana, to protect the United States border with New Spain and to return order to the Neutral Strip. Originally named Cantonment Jesup, the fort operated from 1822 until 1846. After the abandonment of the fort in 1846, the United States federal government continued to own the abandoned fort site until the privatization of the site in 1869.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The Neutral Strip was created after the 1803 Louisiana Purchase, from which arose a disagreement about the location of the border between the American and Spanish territories. In order to avoid a war, the two countries agreed that the land in contention would remain neutral and free of armed forces from either side. This region stretched from Sabine River to Arroyo Hondo and encompassed the land that now makes up modern Sabine Parish, Louisiana. The Neutral Strip remained devoid of government and law enforcement until the Adams–Onís Treaty of 1819 finally set the border at the Sabine River.</p><br>
<h3>Zachary Taylor</h3><br>
<p>Colonel (later General) Zachary Taylor,--future President of the United States—established Cantonment Jesup in 1822 after Fort Seldon, a temporary headquarters for General Edmund Pendleton Gaines, was too far from the conflict zone of the Sabine River. Taylor quickly subdued the former Neutral Strip, gaining experience and popularity. The surgeon at the cantonment recorded meteorological observations. His forces, known as the Army of Observation, remained in the fort and monitored the Texas territory as it passed from Spanish to Mexican control, and finally broke away as an independent republic. In 1845, General Taylor commanded the US Army of Observation&#39;s excursion into Texas and ignited the Mexican-American War. He would eventually gain popularity from his victories that would propel his political career to the Presidency of the United States of America.</p><br>
<h3>Closure</h3><br>
<p>The United States won the war and gained control of Texas, rendering Fort Jesup unnecessary. Officially evacuated in 1846, the fort thereafter deteriorated. The federal government privatized it in 1869.</p><br>
<h3>State Park</h3><br>
<p>By the 1930s, the only remaining building at Fort Jesup was the kitchen of Enlisted Barracks 4. Residents of the nearby town of Many, Louisiana raised money to restore the building and turned the area into a park.</p><br>
<p>The site was acquired by the Louisiana Office of State Parks in 1956, and in 1961, the fort was designated a National Historic Landmark.</p><br>
<p>Since then, the kitchen has been restored and decorated with historically accurate furniture. An officer’s quarters building has been reconstructed, and now serves as a museum.</p><br>
<p>The fort site is located on Louisiana Highway 6, seven miles (11 km) northeast of Many, Louisiana.</p><br>
<p>Teneguía is a monogenetic cinder cone – a vent which has been active once and is considered as being unlikely to become active in the future. It is situated on the island of La Palma, one of the Canary Islands and is located at the southern end of the sub-aerial section of the Cumbre Vieja volcano of which Teneguía is just one of several vents.</p><br>
<h2>1971 eruption</h2><br>
<p>This vent is the source of the last subaerial volcanic eruption in Spain, which occurred from October 26 to November 28, 1971. Earthquakes preceded the eruption. The eruption killed an elderly fisherman who got too close to the lava and was asphyxiated by the fumes. The eruption also caused some property damage and destroyed a beach, though a new one was later formed by natural means. Populated zones were not affected. The vent has since become an attraction for tourists and forms part of the Monumento Natural de Los Volcanes de Teneguía.</p><br>

<p>The United Church, Chapel on the Hill in Oak Ridge, Tennessee was the city&#39;s main church during World War II. Dedicated on September 30, 1943 and completed late in October 1943, it was originally a multi-denominational chapel shared by Catholic, Protestant and Jewish congregations.</p><br>
<h2>Architectural design</h2><br>
<p>The building design is a USA Army Corps of Engineers 700-series USA Army chapel. It is a frame building built on a three-bay rectangular plan with a steepled bell tower and a gable entry porch. It was one of three Army chapels built using the same design in Oak Ridge during World War II. One of the other two chapels, the West Chapel in the city&#39;s West Village area, was later torn down, but the East Chapel in the East Village is still in use.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The USA Army built the chapel to house religious activities, as one of numerous community facilities in the "townsite" area of Oak Ridge. The building was dedicated on September 30, 1943, in a ceremony that included prayers and talks by a Jewish rabbi, a Catholic priest, an Episcopal priest, a Baptist minister, and the minister who was serving the United Church congregation that eventually came to own the chapel. Its name, "The Chapel on the Hill," comes from a reference in a prayer by the Knoxville Baptist minister who participated in the dedication.</p><br>
<p>The United Church congregation that is housed in the Chapel on the Hill traces its history to July 18, 1943, when some 25 to 30 Christians of diverse denominational backgrounds gathered for Sunday worship in Oak Ridge&#39;s main cafeteria. Subsequently, several members of the group made plans to establish an interdenominational Protestant church, led by laypersons, to include all denominations. A Presbyterian minister working in Knoxville was engaged to conduct weekly services, and about 150 people representing 13 Protestant denominations became charter members of "the United Church". Governing boards of laypersons elected to lead the new congregation took up their duties on October 24, 1943.</p><br>
<p>When the Chapel-on-the-Hill was completed that same month, the United Church and the local Roman Catholic Church were given control of the building, as the only two churches then officially operating in the Manhattan Project community. During the war, when Oak Ridge&#39;s Manhattan Project facilities were operating around the clock, the chapel building was also in use nearly 24 hours a day as a venue for worship services, weddings, and other occasions for local workers of various Protestant, Catholic, and Jewish religious backgrounds.</p><br>
<p>At the peak of wartime activity in Oak Ridge, when the population exceeded 70,000, the United Church employed four ministers and conducted worship services in the Chapel on the Hill, East Village Chapel, and the Jefferson Theater, as well as Sunday school classes in several local schools and a trailer camp. By 1951, the United Church Chapel-on-the-Hill consolidated as a single interdenominational congregation, making its home in the Chapel on the Hill building.</p><br>
<p>The United Church congregation purchased the chapel and 3.72 acre of land from the USA Atomic Energy Commission on May 11, 1955 for a price of $17,116. An adjoining educational building was added in 1956-1957. The facility continues to operate as a nondenominational Protestant church under lay leadership, employing ministers with backgrounds in mainstream Protestant denominations. Since 2007 it has been affiliated with the Center for Progressive Christianity. The church&#39;s motto is "Where People from All Denominations Meet in Their Differences, but Are One in Their Search for God."</p><br>
<p>The Chapel-on-the-Hill was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993 as a contributing property in the Oak Ridge Historic District.</p><br>
<p>The Richard Alsop IV House, also known as the Alsop House, is a historic house at 301 High Street in Middletown, Connecticut. It was designated a USA National Historic Landmark on January 16, 2009.</p><br>
<h2>Relationship to its surroundings</h2><br>
<p>This stately mansion faces east towards the Connecticut River from the west side of High Street opposite the intersection of Court Street. It is set back from the street atop a rise. A high iron fence borders the property along High Street. This house makes an important contribution to the elegance and high style which characterized High Street as the preferred residential area in nineteenth-century Middletown.</p><br>
<h2>Significance</h2><br>
<p>The Alsop house was built in 1838–1839 by Richard Alsop IV for his twice-widowed mother, Mrs. Maria (Alsop) Dana. The short-lived architectural firm formed by Landra Beach Platt and Francis Benne who worked together in New Haven under the tutelage of Sidney Mason Stone was evidently responsible for the design, although it is possible that they drew their inspiration from Ithiel Towns own home in New Haven, which may account for the similarities of the two structures as well as for a former attribution of the Alsop House to Town himself. (Stones possible contributions have yet to be explored.) The well-known Middletown builders, Barzillai Sage and Isaac W. Baldwin, performed the masonry and carpentry work, respectively. The house remained in the hands of Alsop family until its acquisition in 1948 by Wesleyan University.</p><br>
<p>This house is significant architecturally for its transitional Greek-Tuscan Italianate appearance. The cubical, two-story, central block with overhanging eaves is flanked by colonnaded -story wings. A swag-and-tassel design decorates the frieze of the central block, which also displays a veranda supported by delicate ironwork and surmounted by an intricate balustrade.</p><br>
<p>A rear colonnaded wing which originally housed servant&#39;s quarters and service facility has been enclosed. At the west end of this wing are attached an art gallery of recent construction and the art library, originally the stable.</p><br>
<p>The interior of the Alsop house is noted for its decorative wall paintings. The stair hall displays trompe l&#39;oeil painting of figures in niches, while the parlors, dining room and morning-room feature oil-on-plaster paintings. The parlor paintings are classically derived and some subjects are Raphaelesque in origin. In the morning room the formal classicism of the parlors is replaced by scenes derived from the "rural" Italian tradition of wall decoration. Local birds and insects are featured in these scenes. The dining room displays a painted frieze.</p><br>
<p>The main rooms of the house are furnished with period antiques and provide a suitable atmosphere in which to display the wall painting.</p><br>
<p>In its carefully restored condition, the Alsop house remains a monument to the skill of its designers, while serving Wesleyan University and the community as an art center.</p><br>
<h2>Current condition and use</h2><br>
<p>Currently part of the Wesleyan University campus, housing the Davison Art Center, the Richard Alsop IV House has been thoughtfully restored and preserved.</p><br>
<p>The Coite-Hubbard House is a historic house at 269 High Street in Middletown, Connecticut, United States. It is now the official residence of the president of Wesleyan University.</p><br>
<h2>Relationship to surroundings</h2><br>
<p>The house faces east to the Connecticut River from the southwest corner of High Street and Wyllys Avenue. High Street between Church and Washington Streets was the most prestigious residential area in Middletown during the 19th century, and is now a part of the Wesleyan University campus.</p><br>
<h2>Significance</h2><br>
<p>This house was built in 1856 by Gabriel Coite. Coite was a partner in his fathers business in Brooklyn, New York, until he retired to Middletown in 1853. In 1860 he was elected State Senator; and in 1862 became treasurer of the State and moved to Hartford. In 1863, the house was acquired by Mrs. Jane Miles Hubbard, widow of Samuel D. Hubbard. Hubbard was co-founder of the Russell Manufacturing Company, builder of the Mansion block, and a Postmaster General. Wesleyan University purchased the property from Mrs. Hubbards heirs in 1904 for use as the President&#39;s residence. Since then Presidents Raymond, Shanklin, Olin, McConaughty (later Governor of Connecticut), Butterfield, Etherington, and Campbell have occupied the house.</p><br>
<p>This Italianate Villa style house is of a symmetrical cube form with a projecting pavilion, prominent porte cochere, and elaborate scrolled brackets beneath the eaves of the roof and cupola. The treatment of the windows is similarly elaborate with heavy flat pediments supported on consoles. There are elaborate crestings in the window pediments of the front facade. The entrance to the house is distinguished by the porte cochere with paired columns and a balustrade.</p><br>
<p>The large scale of this house, together with its elaborate decorative treatment, makes it one of the most sophisticated examples of its style in Middletown. Its site is at the highest elevation on Main Street, and thereby complements the imposing qualities of the architecture.</p><br>
<p>This is a house of great distinction on a street where high style in architecture was the already established standard at the time of its construction.</p><br>
<h2>Current use and condition</h2><br>
<p>Wesleyan University currently uses the property as a residence for its University President and therefore maintains is very good condition.</p><br>
<p>The Oregon Electric Station is a restaurant in Eugene, Oregon, United States. It was originally built in 1914 as a station for the Oregon Electric Railway and was designed by A. E. Doyle.</p><br>
<p>Passenger service by the Oregon Electric Railway was discontinued in 1933, and the station was used as an office and for storage.</p><br>
<p>In 1961, the station became a branch of the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI), the Southwest Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (SWOMSI). After breaking with OMSI in 1978, the Willamette Science and Technology Center (WISTEC) sold the station and gave the proceeds to Lane County to build a children&#39;s museum in Alton Baker Park.</p><br>
<p>Work began to convert the station into a restaurant in 1977. The first restaurant in the space was called "Andy&#39;s Eugene Station".</p><br>
<p>The station was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as the Oregon Electric Railway Passenger Station, in 1979.</p><br>
<p>The Edward Augustus Russell House is a Greek Revival house on the Wesleyan University campus. The house, at 318 High Street, faces west from the east side of High Street north of the corner at High and Court Streets. A large wooded lawn extends to the Honors College  property to the north. High Street between Church and Washington Streets was the most prestigious residential area in Middletown during the 19th century. It was later home to the KNK Fraternity of Wesleyan University. The structural system consists of load-bearing masonry with a flat roof, and materials include brick and flushboarding walls and a brownstone foundation.</p><br>
<h2>Significance</h2><br>
<p>This house was built in 1841-1842 for Edward A. Russell (1797–1874) on a portion of the Russell family estate. Edward Russell worked in the foreign mercantile trade until he returned to Middletown in 1838. He later served as mayor, state representative and national convention delegate.</p><br>
<p>Edward A. Russell had personal contact with the firm of Town and Davis while supervising the building of the well-known Greek Revival Russell House (1828) for his younger brother, Samuel W. Russell. Thus it is possible that Edward retained the services of this firm when his house was built. Such a possibility is reinforced by early photographs showing the original proportions and decoration. These indicate that the house was a sophisticated and high style example of Greek Revival, and stylistically close to the DeRham Brevoort House (attributed to Davis) in New York City and "Highwood", Henry Whitney&#39;s estate in New Haven (1835–1836) by Town and Davis.</p><br>
<p>Edward Russell&#39;s grand-nephew, Richard L. deZeng (1847–1932), occupied the house until his death in 1932. Wesleyan purchased the property from the administrators of the estate of E.A. Russell and then sold it to Alpha Sigma Delta Alumni Association, Inc. in 1934. At this time the structure was altered for use as a fraternity house.</p><br>
<p>The heavy cornice at the top of the building was lowered to the second floor and windows were placed above the cornice to form a full third floor. Window cornices were removed and new window openings cut in the south facade. The second and third floors were divided into three room suites; however, the first floor remains largely unaltered.</p><br>
<p>This house was the last example of Greek Revival architecture to be built in the prestigious area of High Street.</p><br>
